Fall art in New York City, there's nothing like it. The museums and galleries seem to save their biggest, most ambitious shows for this stretch, and there's a real energy to the calendar right now. Below are the shows, fairs, and openings I'm most excited about this season.
The Armory Show is happening later this year, moving from its usual early-September time to September 24–27 at the Javits Center. It’s the fair’s 32nd edition, with around 230 galleries from over 30 countries. If you’re going to make one big art-fair trip this fall, this is the one.
The Affordable Art Fair returns to the Starrett-Lehigh Building September 16–20, with over 400 exhibitors and original work ranging from $100 to $12,000. We’ve found some pieces there in past years, and one gallery we always make a point to visit is TAG Fine Arts. A great stop if you’re looking to add something original to your walls, and some playful pieces for the kid’s walls.
I’m looking forward to the Neue Galerie to reopening this fall. The museum has been closed for renovation, but it’s coming back November 12 with a 25th Anniversary Exhibition, including Klimt’s iconic Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I. Café Sabarsky reopens even sooner, on October 1. It’s such a special place and I’m glad to have it back.
