The NYC Birthday Party Planning Guide, Part 1: Venues
The best kid's venues in NYC for an unforgettable birthday bash.
In another life, I’m fairly certain I’d come back as a New York City child—purely for the birthday party circuit. The good news is that for those of us planning them, the city offers no shortage of exceptional venues for every kind of child. Below is a curated list, but as with anything in this city, there is always more to discover. If you have a favorite I’ve missed, I would love to hear it.
And we’re just getting started. In the next birthday party issue, I’ll dive into everything beyond the venue—entertainment, vendors, décor, cakes, and all the details that bring a party to life. If you have a vendor, performer, or party resource you swear by, send email me here, I’d love to include your favorites.
Below, I've marked my personal favorite spaces with a 🎉🎉🎉 — consider it my editor's pick for venues that really deliver.
🎉🎉🎉 Complete Playground (FiDi): The sheer variety: ninja zones, trampolines, sensory areas — means kids of all ages and energy levels stay engaged. A solid, crowd-pleasing pick that’s ideal for larger groups—there’s enough going on that kids naturally spread out.
🎉🎉🎉 Space (Brooklyn — Greenpoint, Fort Greene, Dumbo): The Dumbo location is worth the trip — a three-level playground with immersive design elements that go well beyond a typical playspace. Insider tip: Opt for Dumbo over other locations—it’s the most visually impressive and feels like a true “destination” party.
Cocoon (Tribeca & UWS): A beautifully designed space that feels more intentional than most. The membership base keeps it from ever feeling chaotic or overcrowded. Insider tip: Book an early time slot—especially on weekends—for a calmer, more controlled experience.
Gymtime Rhythm & Glues (UES): A versatile party option — gymnastics, art, cooking, music, and more — so you can tailor it entirely to your child’s interests. Insider tip: Ask about combining two activities (e.g., gym + art) to keep the flow dynamic for mixed-interest groups.
🎉🎉🎉 Genius Gems (Chelsea): The open-ended Magna-tile and design challenge format lets kids direct their own fun — one of the most-requested party venues for the build-obsessed set. Best for kids 4+ who can engage independently—less structured, more creativity-driven.
Museum of Mathematics / MoMath (Flatiron): Full-day museum access plus a private room and guided math activity — think building Leonardo da Vinci-inspired domes or a museum-wide scavenger hunt. A smart, unexpected pick for the curious kid.
🎉🎉🎉 Colorpop (UES, two locations): A bright, cheerful studio where kids paint, work with clay, and create mixed-media projects. My daughter always comes home with something worth displaying, the teachers are incredible and it’s well-organized and run. They also can come to you with flexible party options. Highly recommend!
Taste Buds Kitchen (Chelsea): A well-oiled cooking party format with kids preparing a real menu from scratch. Completely nut-free and accommodating to most dietary restrictions.
The Fashion Class (UES & UWS): An actual design workshop, not a dress-up party — best for older kids and pre-teens with a genuine interest in fashion.
Loop of the Loom (UES & DUMBO): Kids learn weaving and fiber arts in a calm, beautifully designed studio, with every child leaving with something handmade. Insider tip: Works best as a smaller group.
Ballet Academy East (UES): A dance-world setting that feels spacious from typical party venues, all plug-and-play. Magical for little ones who are already dance-obsessed.
🎉🎉🎉 Five Iron Golf (multiple locations): Feels more like a video game, keeping the energy high even for non-golfers. Book on a weekend morning before the venue shifts to its adults-only vibe. Insider tip: Request games on the simulators rather than traditional golf play.
NYC Elite Gymnastics (multiple locations): One of the more popular UES party spots — a tightly run, high-energy two-hour program that keeps kids entertained. Super plug-and-play. Insider tip: Book in advance—prime slots go quickly.
🎉🎉🎉 Davis Center Ice Skating (Central Park, Harlem Meer): This is a beautiful, seasonal winter pick. Newly opened and under-the-radar alternative to the crowded Wollman rink, with a newly renovated, spacious facility well-suited for parties. Insider tip: Consider weekday afternoons for a more private-feeling experience.
The Gaga Center (UES): The only dedicated gaga ball facility in Manhattan — fast-paced and high-energy.. Birthday packages are well-run. Insider tip: Best for ages 6+—younger kids may need a bit of guidance to get into the flow.
Ferox Ninja Park (Greenpoint & Dumbo): Great variety of obstacles with staff well-versed in running high-energy birthday groups. Kids will be happily worn out.
Indoor Rock Climbing (Central Rock Gym, VITAL, MPHC): The auto-belay setup means total beginners feel accomplished — great for mixed-ability groups.
🎉🎉🎉 Chelsea Piers (Chelsea): Sky Rink, Lucky Strike bowling, the Field House, golf — you can customize a party around whatever your kid loves most, Chelsea Piers has it all. A well-oiled machine, reliable and easy to execute.
Asphalt Green (UES): The pool party option is a genuine rarity for Manhattan birthday parties and one of the best in the city. The multi-sport packages are equally well-run. Insider tip: Pool parties book extremely early—secure your slot as soon as registration opens.
🎉🎉🎉 Ace Martial Arts (UES): An introduction to Tae Kwon Do in a structured, high-energy setting. There are no shortage of martial arts studios in the city, but I love this one the most. Insider tip: Kids love breaking boards—ask if that can be included.
Kids in Sports (UES — multiple locations): Multi-sport birthday parties for starting at one year, with a low coach-to-child ratio and age-appropriate programming. Insider tip: Ideal for younger kids—coaches do a great job keeping everyone engaged and included.
🎉🎉🎉 Fastbreak Sports (UES): Basketball, flag football, and multi-sport parties run by genuinely excellent coaches. Perfect for the kid who just wants to run around with friends. Insider tip: Let your child pick the sport focus—it keeps the group more engaged and ask for the bouncy house to be included.
Jodi’s Gym (UES): An UES institution, gymnastics and ninja-themed parties with a warm, community-oriented, and consistently well-run. Insider tip: Morning slots tend to be the smoothest.
92Y GymMaze: A warm, community feel that’s lower-key and less overwhelming than the bigger playspaces. A beloved neighborhood institution.
MyGym (multiple locations): Structured, professionally run formats perfectly suited to toddlers, with with instructors handling most of the logistics.
CAMP NYC (Flatiron): Rotating themed installations mean the experience is always fresh. Currently Bluey-themed, a guaranteed hit.
🎉🎉🎉 Playstreet Museum (UWS): Themed imaginative exhibits make this feel more special than a standard playspace. Insider tip: Book the first party of the day for a cleaner, less crowded feel.
Let’s Dress Up (UES): Kids get fully styled, making it feel like an event rather than just a party. Not really a co-ed pick. Insider tip: Lean into a theme (princess, pop star, etc.), it elevates the experience.
The Art Farm (UES): The animal interaction element is something kids simply can’t get anywhere else. Insider tip: Ask about indoor vs. outdoor setup depending on weather and season.
Urban Dunes (UES): Themed sand zones keep toddlers happily occupied for the entire party window without any structured programming needed. Insider tip: Bring extra socks and clothes—sand travels.
Children’s Museum of Manhattan (UWS): Well-organized packages with built-in access to the museum’s interactive exhibits. Insider tip: Works best when paired with a short, structured activity before free play.
🎉🎉🎉 Area 53 (Dumbo & Williamsburg): Laser tag, ropes courses, and arcade elements make this feel more like an adventure than a birthday party. Great for older kids who’ve outgrown the standard playspace.
New York Ninja Academy (Park Slope & Chelsea): A full 90 minutes of pure action — no downtime, no party room. Some coaches are actual American Ninja Warrior competitors, which kids absolutely love.
Dave & Busters: The arcade token format means kids self-direct the whole time — one of the easiest parties to manage, and consistently a massive hit. Insider tip: Pre-load cards generously to avoid mid-party interruptions.
American Dream (NJ): Americana at its most maximalist. DreamWorks Water Park, Nickelodeon Universe roller coasters, LEGO zones, mini-golf — pick one and commit, or you'll never leave. Kids will be in absolute heaven, and you'll be a saint of a parent for pulling it off. Insider tip: book a party bus — logistics are everything on this one.
🎉🎉🎉 Urban Air Trampoline (NJ): A short drive but dramatically larger than anything comparable in the city, with party packages that are very reasonably priced compared to Manhattan alternatives. Insider tip: Go early in the day to avoid peak crowds.
🎉🎉🎉 Museum of Ice Cream: The novelty and colorful environment make for great party photos. Private event packages are more flexible than you’d expect; best for kids 5+. and, of course, plenty of ice cream—hard to beat.

CinemaKidz: Kids write, direct, act, and crew their own original movie, music video, or stop-motion animation. Every guest has a real role, and everything is tailored to your child’s vision beforehand. A creative alternative to the typical party. Insider tip: Share your child’s interests ahead of time—they tailor the entire experience around it.
TWA Hotel (JFK): The iconic mid-century terminal is endlessly fun — a Twister room, vintage cars, museum exhibits, and a rooftop pool overlooking active runways. The Roll-A-Rama rink on the tarmac can also be rented privately.
